An Interview with Entrepreneur JoJo Yawson

By Spokes Digital Team

My name is JoJo Yawson but I preferred to go by JoJo Yao. YAO is my original family name. The name before my father changed to YAWSON when he migrated to England many years ago to further his education. I believe that change was important to him at the time of his transitioning and perhaps a necessity for him to fit into a new place and conveniently adopt the new culture. Sooner or later I will revert back to that original family name, to the ROOTS.

JoJo Yao, I was born in Ghana, West Africa, into a Spiritual/ Religious family. Hinduism as my birth Religion. Spirituality is a very important aspect of my life and is the very foundation and roots of my inspiration, success, existence and joy. I consider myself very spiritual. I would say I attend the Church of ALL RELIGION within me, where the absolute TRUTH is found. I see GOD in ALL People and also in ALL Religions.

I came to United States of America around late January of 2002 as an international student. I arrived through Chicago, Illinois, and experienced my first culture shock. An extremely unpleasant super cold weather welcomed me as a new guest to my new nation. It was very brutal considering I came from a tropical nation. I deemed the severity of the weather as Mother nature’s way of telling my path was going to be a tough and a very long journey, in this place I considered the Promised land. The land flowing with MILK and HONEY!

Lack of Money became an issue when I arrived in America, so I had to delay my schooling for a while. I was on my own. To make a long story short, God Within, led me to the right places and to the right people, at the right time. Persevering through my struggles, I eventually ended up graduating from University of Minnesota, twin cities, with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies, Mass Communications and Global Studies. I later moved to California in 2009 where I also obtained a Master’s degree at University of San Francisco in Organization development. So, I now live in Los Angeles, in the most wonderful state of California.

When did you first discover your entrepreneurial spirit and How is your entrepreneurial career developing so far?

I discovered my entrepreneurial spirit after my father lost his position as a CEO of a Government organization in Ghana. It was an unfortunate event which lead him into forfeiting his end of service benefits and pension package. He was unfairly treated, accused of something he never did, and even when he was cleared of it, the aftermath remained a great challenge. His life was never the same again. We lost the luxury we grew up accustomed with. So, I vowed then, at the age of about 12 years that I would definitely create my own business one day, so that nobody nor any organization could decide tomorrow to let me go whenever they wanted. At that point I knew I had it in me to make things happen, just as my father successfully managed and led the growth, development and transformation of other organizations including the last one he headed.

What has been the biggest success and biggest failure stories you went through?

My biggest success stories are so many and happens so often whenever people I have helped call me to express their appreciation and satisfaction and give me update of their successes. Failures, those are meant to happen every now and then. I only use those to learn and get better. I don’t consider any failure of mine that big of a deal, so I will say those have all been learning moments. It’s the learning that makes failure irrelevant and also relevant so to speak.

How did you come up with the idea for OmYao-Channel 777 and how did it all start?

OmYao channel 777 has always been my call to serve humanity as a source of inspiration and education and reminding others to connect with the source of power and love within always. Growing up in a house where spiritual teachings was so prevalent, I couldn’t help but to be fed over and over with so much knowledge and positivity. When I was 14 years I would have visions of inventing a device to help people communicate better with one another and ultimately with GOD. So that morphed into the development and the birth of OmYao Channel 777, as a technology platform where myself and many others Globally, can share insight, inspiration, motivation, motivational entertainment and tools and practices etc., to help one another become better and brighter.

In your opinion, what are the hurdles that keep people away from starting an entrepreneurial career?

The fear of the unknown, lack of confidence, no vision, focusing too much on how to make money while forgetting about their mission and why they should start, being too comfortable with the status quo, lack of adequate coaching and having someone use their own success to remind them they too can do it and should not be afraid to do it.

What advice would you give to the new entrepreneurs?

Get a mentor and learn as much as you can from them. Dare to take risks to become your own boss so that you can also lead and build the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.
